In This Episode, You'll Discover:

  • How one man's experience with depression led him to creating legislation and bills to bring more awareness to the importance of depression, suicide, and other mental health issues.

Wisdom from Mike:

  • Depression symptoms can be different for each person. Sadness, lethargy, anxiety, changes in eating or appetite, and "foggy" thinking are common. If you are in crisis there are people you can talk to.
  • There are suicide prevention hotlines, national depression hotlines, and screening tests you take yourself online. Help is available.
  • It’s not a sign of weakness. It’s a sign of strength to ask for help. What you suffer from is what it is. How you deal with it determines how successful of a person -- how happy of a person -- you are going to be.
  • Depression alters the way you think. You don’t realize how bad things are.
  • If you are in a room with 10 people, odds are there are two people who have a mental illnesses.
  • Odds are greater than you think that people will look at your story as positive, if you choose to share it. It’s also very powerful and freeing.
  • There is more support out there than I thought there would be.
  • Coming out (sharing my depression)  made my life so much better.
  • If you deal with your disease, you can live a really good life.
  • The inspiration is within you all along. Writing helped me bring out good feelings that I had within myself.
  • Dealing with depression: Writing was a big help. Keep as busy as humanly possible. Seeing a therapist. Exercise like a lunatic.
  • On days where I’m depressed, If I exercise, I feel better. Almost as soon as I’m done.
  • Remind yourself that whatever you’re going through in that moment is temporary.
  • Depression is really, really good at manipulating your mind.
  • You have to hold onto some core truths about who you are. If I could go back and tell myself something it would be, try something.
  • You can not lie there and wallow in it. You will never get better.
  • You have to do something. Anything.
  • Who ever you are, what ever challenges you’re suffering from, I guarantee that there are people out there who’s willing to stop whatever they are doing to help you get out of the darkness.
  • Do something. Give yourself a chance to be whoever you’re supposed to be.
